Motocross Bike Races

As parents who have boys involved in the motocross bicycle racing at Caliche Park at Campbell and 12th and since we would like to see the sport grow, we feel it is time to do some "squawking." We are referring to the article "Bicycle races raise dust - and a storm." We certainly hope that those who are complaining, have achieved some satisfaction out of ruining something that took a lot of effort, time and interest in kids to organize and maintain. They apparently are not aware of the dedication Mr. Kleinberg has for his club and how hard he has worked to hold it together. These kids spend many constructive hours repairing, cleaning, and maintaining their bikes for the races.

Complainers have commented "There is a track at Randolph sponsored by the city, go use it!" This is great but - our club was formed and Caliche Park operating successfully before this track opened; we don’t feel we should disintegrate our club just because another group or facility opens up. We feel more than one track promotes a more challenging and competitive race between riders.

Regarding the gift certificates - this idea was lauded by the parents as the kids felt a sense of pride in being able to "earn" enough through winning to purchase their own bicycle parts and equipment. As for the dust complaint, if it was as intolerable as one is led to believe, we parents who spend Sunday after Sunday there would be at death’s door! The truth is the dust was very minimal, except when there was a heavy wind.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Burnett
